Student Work
Computer Literacy
Miss Kristin Crooks was here for 10 weeks at the beginning of the school year to teach our students Computer Literacy. During her stay with us the children learned about many different educational websites, software, and programs.
Kindergarten has had the opportunity to play a lot of computer games that help with their mouse coordination and typing skills. We also like to use a program called TuxPaint where the students use the mouse to paint pictures. They have had a blast with that. We created a TuxPaint Quilt in each Kindergarten class that hangs in the FES Media Center.
Kindergarten also got the chance to become familiar with the Excel program. While we do not use Excel for the purpose it is intended, we start Kindergarteners on it so they can get used to the layout and looks of the program. In our lessons, we used it to help the students show the value of each number from 1 to 10.
First grade created mini-books called "Who Am I?". They worked hard to think of clues about themselves that would help their classmates and peers find out more about them. Then we used the PowerPoint program to insert all of our clues and a picture of themselves at the end. Printing out slides four per page allows the students to cut out each slide and create their "mini-book.
Second grade also created a mini-book. Their mini-books were all about the state of Maryland. We did research on the internet to find out what some of the state symbols of Maryland were. Then we put all of the information into PowerPoint and added some pictures. Each child chose their own "Fun Fact" to add to the end of their book. All of the information about Maryland was found on a website called apples4theteacher.com.
Third, fourth, and fifth grade often do many of the same assignments. We always start off the year with a few lessons about Internet safety. This year we are using a lot of content from a website called Netsmartz.org.
One of our biggest topics during my time here is cyberbullying. We take a lot of time to talk to the students about what cyberbullying is, how to prevent it from happening to you, and how to keep yourself from being a cyberbully. This year the students created Wordles. A Wordle is a word cloud filled with words all having to do with the same topic. Our topic was cyberbullying. Each student wrote down as many facts about cyberbullying as they could think of and pasted their information into the Wordle website. Wordles are generated randomly and then the students can customize it by font, layout, and color.
